Define the job before the machine
A known-good workstation begins with work, not a parts list. Define the model class, runtime, context, concurrency, latency target, privacy class, duty cycle, storage need, and acceptable fallback.
Then decide whether local execution is required, merely preferred, or one route among several.
Evaluate the complete system
Graphics memory is only one constraint. Review system memory, storage capacity and endurance, processor needs, power delivery, cooling, acoustics, physical space, networking, operating-system support, runtime compatibility, and recovery.
Include setup time, maintenance, failed experiments, idle capacity, and operator attention in the cost model.
Compare alternatives
The right answer may be the machine already available, a smaller local system, an upgraded workstation, or approved cloud capacity for infrequent peaks. Hybrid routing must stay explicit and must not silently move private work.
Evidence before purchase
Require fresh compatibility and price sources, an exact workload, test method, alternatives, upgrade path, and return or recovery plan. Compensation must never determine rank.
Foundation limit
This is an educational framework, not a current buying guide. No parts, prices, vendors, or affiliate programs are active.
