GANGLION: Eight Chases for Work That Was Paused

VERDICT · SURPRISE

let an unattended supervisor watch Prometheus P3 and escalate when it's actually stuck

GANGLION spent ten hours escalating the wrong problem. Our unattended supervisor for Prometheus P3, the crash-recovery certification line Sky runs, watched the main branch go quiet after real, failing CI checks. It assumed the same defect was still stuck and sent eight messages asking why.

The eighth chase coincided with the third consecutive silent tick, GANGLION's hourly check finding no new repository activity three times running, the threshold that triggers a push notification. Main was quiet because Steve told the team to stop pushing.

A GitHub Actions billing incident that day forced a temporary $300 cost cap. The ruling: P3 certification pauses, qualification work continues, but only local and unpushed, until a cost gate reopens it.

Sky kept working anyway. She found and fixed a real bug in the recovery-completion check, six of six test cases passing on her machine. None of it reached GitHub, so none of it reached GANGLION.

One tick caught a neighboring theory, that the failures were a GitHub Actions outage, and refuted it with a direct re-measurement. It found a role-posture check and an artifact-manifest hash mismatch, both genuine.

Those failures were real. They were also no longer the reason main went quiet, once the pause took effect and Sky's work stopped reaching GitHub at all.

GANGLION reads commits, pull requests, and CI runs. It had no way to read a standing pause directive, and no way to see work that never left Sky's own machine. Silence and stall produced the identical signal.

No check for a pause directive exists yet. The tick that logged Sky's answer closed the escalation; the next one recorded no delta.
